Zappone Chrysler Jeep Dodge - Granville

Living in upstate New York you know that the weather can be a bit crazy at times. And with September gearing up, there’s one thing that we know for sure and that is that winter is coming. Don’t freak out quite yet, there’s no white stuff falling from the sky but it is time to get our vehicle ready for what is to come. This week we are focusing on your tires and their tread. Below you will find our easy guide on checking your tire’s tread and when it’s time to replace them. Check it out and schedule your next service appointment online today!

You should be monitoring your tread depth closely once it reaches 4/32 inch deep.

  • 4/32” or deeper = your tread is still in good shape
  • 3/32” = your tread is wearing and you should replace soon
  • 2/32” = it’s time to replace your tires as soon as possible

Now, put your tread to the test with these easy-to-follow tests:

The Penny Test

  • Insert a penny into your tire’s tread groove with Lincoln’s head upside down into the tread facing toward you. If you can see all of the head, your tread depth is less than 2/32” and it is time to replace your tires.

The Quarter Test

  • We want to recreate the same test but instead of a penny, we are going to use a quarter. If the tread reaches Washington’s head on the quarter, you have at least 4/32” of tread remaining. This means that your tire’s tread is still in good health!

Don’t have change? We have you covered!

  • Take a look at your tread wear indicator bar that is molded into the tread of your tires. Bars are located at the bottom of tread grooves in multiple locations; when these bars are visibly flush with the adjacent ribs, your tire has no more than 2/32” of tread left. This is a visible indication that you need to swap out these tires!

September is basically here and before we know it the weather will start changing and the leaves will start falling. But before fall kicks into high gear, it might be a good time to service your CJDR for the fall, right here at Zappone CJDR in Granville! Whether your ride just needs a tune-up after a long summer of travel or is in need of more serious service, our team can get the job done quickly! However, we know a lot of our CJDR owners like to complete service on their own, which is why we have some DIY fall service for you to complete before the weather starts changing. Take a peek below to see what service you start completing, or head over to our service scheduler to schedule an appointment today!

Battery Power:

  • Making sure your battery is fresh is important. The experts say you should change your battery every 3 years, though you could get away with 5 depending on how much you drive…If you’re thinking to yourself “I can’t remember the last time I changed my battery,” it might be time to do so.
  • Make sure the cables are not loose. With the engine off, see if the cables can slip free from the nodes. Don’t yank, but be firm.
  • Check for corrosion, a white powder that forms around the nodes or clamps of your battery. You can clean this off using baking soda, water, and a toothbrush.

Fill your Fluids:

  • It might cost you a little bit more but invest in a “winter blend” type of windshield wiper fluid. These tend to have more alcohol in them and less water so the chance of freezing is less.
  • If your windshield washer fluid tank hasn’t been flushed in a few years then it could use it! Be sure not to mix colors; most antifreeze is green, blue, or yellow, but be sure not to mix colors.
  • Checking your vehicle’s oil is important. If you have not had an oil change in a long time, it might be time for one.

Additional Preventative Measures:

  • Buy an emergency kit with cables, a first aid kit, flares, a battery-powered air compressor, and other things that can prevent a minor inconvenience from becoming a major problem.
  • Check the clarity of all your lights.
  • Keeping the gas tank at half-filled can help prevent a fuel line freeze; so can that fuel-line antifreeze mentioned earlier.
  • Tire pressure is important in the snow, be sure that your vehicle’s tires are to the correct PSI.

Owning a vehicle can sometimes be a pain, especially when it comes to smells that you might not realize are clear indications that things are going wrong. This week, we are bringing you seven important smells that you’ll want to do something about. Take a look at our guide below and if something smells a little funky currently, hurry on in to see our team today and let’s get your vehicle in-check and ready to hit the road for your next summer road trip!

The Smell: Rotten eggs
The Diagnosis: Your catalytic converter may be having issues and hydrogen sulfide is making its way right into your exhaust. Either your fuel injection line is having an issue or your catalytic converter is failing. This can be a hefty repair so it’s important to have this checked out sooner rather than later.

The Smell: Burning Rubber
The Diagnosis: Oftentimes, the smell of burning rubber means that your drive belts are slipping or your hoses are loose and rubbing on other engine components. This is what creates that hot, burning smell. Once your engine is completely cooled off, take a look and if you need assistance, give our team a call!

The Smell: Sulfur

The Diagnosis: When you smell sulfur in your car all the time, you can assume that it’s gear lubricant leaking from the manual transmission, transfer case, or differential housing. There are sulfur compounds in the oil that serve as extreme-pressure lubricants for the gears in these parts, and after being in use for a few years this substance can get kind of gross. Oily puddles under your vehicle are a clear indication of something going wrong here so if you see this, bring your ride in and let our professionals fix it up!

The Smell: Maple syrup

The Diagnosis: Coolant has ethylene glycol in it, which smells sweet but is most definitely toxic. If this is what you are smelling, that means there’s a leak somewhere in your vehicle and your best bet is to stop in to have this repaired. Oftentimes, this is a simple and rather inexpensive repair!

The Smell: Burning carpet

The Diagnosis: The smell of burning carpet tends to mean that your brakes are overheating. And is most common if you have spent a lot of time behind the wheel for a road trip. But if you haven’t just completed a long road trip, it’s possible that you have seized your calipers or parking brake. So if this is what you’re smelling, stop in to see our team for a check-up!

The Smell: Hot oil

The Diagnosis: If you’re smelling hot oil, it’s probably because your oil is leaking onto the exhaust manifold. The reason you can smell it is that your engine is obviously hot when your vehicle is running and it creates the rather noticeable smell. If you can, try to find the leak, stem it and bring your vehicle into the shop as soon as possible. But, NEVER work on a hot engine!

The Smell: Gym locker room

The Diagnosis: Sometimes this could just be your gym back from your previous workout. But if not, it could mean that your A/C unit has a bit of mildew on it. This is caused by excess moisture. Replace your cabin filter and run your vehicle’s fan on high for a quick fix to this smell!

The holiday spirit is in the air with hamburgers sizzling on the grill, ball caps proudly worn, and fireworks ready to illuminate the sky! We hope you’re looking forward to all the exciting festivities and cherished moments with your loved ones. In order to allow our dedicated team to partake in the celebrations and spend quality time with their families, Zappone CJDR will be closed on Independence Day. We apologize for any inconvenience caused. However, we invite you to visit our dealership at 8556 State Route 22, Granville, NY 12832, during our regular hours on Wednesday, July 5th, so you can test drive your dream ride!
