Lurking Potholes: A Horror Story

Do you ever have one of those days where you are driving along and ka-bam! Slam! Jam! – A pothole appears out of seemingly nowhere. One so big that it nearly swallows up your entire car.. Alright, alright, maybe it wasn’t that big but it sure seemed like it. Living in New York, we are no strangers to those lurking little demons that can cause your wallet hundreds of dollars in repairs for your vehicle. Check out our tips to saving your car from a visit to the shop and how to avoid potholes altogether!
Slow it down – the worst thing you can do if you encounter a pothole is driving through at a fast pace. The faster you power through the pothole, the worse the damage will be. Take is slow, or try to maneuver around the pothole.
Space it out – take some space for yourself, if you’re following the vehicle in front of you too close you risk the chance of hitting the same pothole they hit. If you give yourself enough space, you will have time to react and avoid hitting the pothole.
Puddles are the worst – if you see a puddle, avoid that puppy! Puddles are infamous for hiding a deep crater that your car can and will be sucked into. Be cautious when you approach a puddle and avoid it at all costs.
Don’t brake – in the event that you do hit a pothole, do not, I repeat do not brake. If you do hit a pothole and brake you run the chance of doing more damage to your vehicle than just driving through.
Hold on for life – hitting a pothole can not only do damage to your vehicle but can violently jolt you and your passengers. Make sure you have a solid grip on the steering wheel so you don’t lose control of your vehicle when passing through.
Fill up those tires – keeping your tires properly inflated will give your vehicle added protection when passing through potholes. This does not mean that you can hit potholes at full speed, just that you will have a little-added cushion.
It is important to take care of damage as soon as you notice it. If you have any questions give us a call or stop by our service department!
Quick Tips To Spring Clean Your Car

Spring has finally sprung here in New York and one of the best ways to enjoy it is getting outside and giving your car that spring clean that we have all been putting off. With a couple sunshiny days, I am finally motivated to clean out the inside of my car. Below you’ll find some quick tricks to spring clean your vehicle!
-
Get rid of any trash that has been piling up. You may not need all of those plastic shopping bags or the water bottles that you’ve been tossing in your backseat for months. Decide what you’re keeping and what is getting thrown out/ recycled.
-
Vacuum your floorboards, mats, seats and really anywhere you think dirt might be hiding. If you have carpet floor mats show them some TLC by throwing them in the washing machine on a heavy duty cycle. If you have all-weather mats, rinse them off with some soap and water for a fresh, clean look.
-
Using a microfiber cleaning cloth, wipe down your dashboard, doors, center console and anywhere else that dust has a tendency to build up. Don’t forget about your ceiling, dirt and dust can build there too. Wipes specifically made for car care are a great, easy way to make sure your car stays clean and dust free year round.
-
Air vents tend to harbor dust when they are not cleaned often. Cleaning out the dust will also cut down on your allergy symptoms, as well. Foam art brushes work wonders when it comes to this, they will grab the dust and dirt from those hard to reach spaces. Q-tips also work very well for this purpose. You can also use an all-purpose cleaning solution to free your vents from some of the build up.
-
A key part of driving is being able to see, your windshield being clean and clear plays an important role in safe driving. Use a glass cleaner and a microfiber towel to ensure you get a bright, sparkly windshield.
Dashboard Lights You Need To Know

When it comes to your dashboard a lot of things can light up – or go wrong. Although it is great to have a tool that indicates that something is happening in your vehicle, sometimes we’re not so sure what those little lights mean. This week I am bringing you a list of lights that are important to know!
The Oil Pressure Warning light will illuminate when low oil pressure is detected, it’s important to turn off your engine to avoid engine damage. You’ll need to have a mechanic check your oil pressure right away, an amber light can indicate oil level is getting low in some vehicles.
The Battery Warning light will illuminate when something is going wrong with your battery. Don’t try to fix this issue yourself, seek professional help immediately to resolve this issue.
The Traction Control Light will come on to warn the driver of dangerous driving conditions. It’s important to take your time and don’t rush if this light illuminates on your dash.
Your Engine Temperature Warning Light will appear when your engine has the possibility of overheating. This is important to pay attention too, and will usually direct you to stop and turn off your vehicle immediately.
The Tire Pressure Warning will appear and look like this, this is warning you that one or more tires need to be brought back to the correct pressure. If you don’t know your correct pressure, check your owner’s manual.
Your Engine Management Light will illuminate when something within your engine system has gone wrong. These problems are usually related to emissions or running issues. If this light appears you should seek immediate help and bring your car to a professional right away.
Your dashboard can be a scary sight when any of the lights illuminate but it is important to know which is which and what you need to do in the event of them popping up. Some are much more dangerous than others but knowing your lights will keep you safe and your vehicle running properly.

Putting Safety In Construction Zones!
With Springtime in full swing, we can count on roadway construction to begin any day now. Something that crosses our mind but we don’t put much thought into is how our driving can impact ourselves, other drivers, and the construction workers. We are here to help with some tips on how to keep everyone safe while you pass through construction zones. Safety is the most important thing to remember while passing through, if you are speeding or driving recklessly, you can be subject to tickets, along with doubled fines. Check out our top safety tips for passing through a work zone below.
- Pay attention, dedicate your full attention to the roadway. Stay alert and minimize any distractions that will take your concentration away from the road.
- Keep your headlights on.
- Pay attention to the other drivers, they can be unpredictable. Being alert can help you stay safe in a potentially bad situation.
- Don’t tailgate, follow other vehicles at a safe distance. Work zones are often referred to as “sudden stop” zones, be alert and brake when needed.
- Speed limits are set for a reason, obey them and be prepared to slow down further if conditions permit.
- Only change lanes when needed, traffic conditions permit, and where pavement markings indicate it is alright to change lanes.
- Follow instructions from workers, especially flaggers.
- Expect the unexpected; workers, other vehicles or equipment could enter your lane at any moment, be prepared.
- Lastly, be patient. You will get to your destination, better to be safe than sorry!
Keep an eye out for construction zones this spring/ summer, and remember these tips while you’re passing through. You can stay ticket-free and keep everyone safe by your driving habits!

Give Your Air System A Spring Spruce-Up

With the change of seasons comes the urge to clean everything, turn over a new leaf, and open all the windows and enjoy the fresh spring air. Of course, in your vehicle that might be a different story, especially if your air system isn’t the cleanest. This week’s blog is dedicated to telling you how you can make sure the air coming out of your vents is as fresh as the spring air itself and free of dust, pollen, dirt, and other nasty stuff that can create an odor. Take a look and follow our tips!
Your first task is cleaning the physical vents that are in your vehicle, the ones you see and adjust every day. You’ll need cleaning solution, white vinegar, a vacuum, and cotton swabs! Give your vents a vacuum to get any loose dust out. Then you want to take a cotton swab that’s been dipped in a cleaning solution and really work it into the crevices and hard-to-reach spots. When the cotton swabs you’re using come back clean, you know you’ve gotten all the grime. Then, take another cotton swab dipped in white vinegar and just go over it all again to get rid of any lingering odors. The vinegar smell doesn’t last long, and when it disappears it takes odors with it. Give the vents one last vacuum and you’re done! Make sure you’ve gotten every single vent, even the one right up next to your windshield.
The next step is to take a look at your cabin air filter. Your owner’s manual should cover how to access it, and if not there’s always YouTube. The cabin air filter is your barrier against everything that’s floating through the air that you drive your car through – pollen, dust, smells, odors – and it’s often a forgotten part of the vehicle. Take a look, and if you think it needs changing then schedule an appointment with us to have our service department take care of it!
Finally, if you still smell something that reminds you of dirty socks in the car when you run the air, you might have mildew in your A/C evaporator. It’s easy to dry that up! Just drive about a mile away from home (that’s enough time to warm up your engine, you see) and then roll down all your windows and turn the air on full blast. Don’t use the A/C! Just regular old air will do. Keep it running for a minute or two, and that should be enough time to circulate air through the evaporator and dry up any residual moisture.
