While summer is coming to an end, it’s still important to swing by our service department and have your vehicle serviced. Extreme temperatures are hard on your vehicle and can push an already dying vehicle right over the edge. Or if your vehicle is newer, it’s important to keep it healthy for the future. This week, we have your list of five items to have checked out when you stop in to see our team this month. Take a look below and be sure to head in to see our team and grab your service coupon so you can keep that cash in your wallet for one last summer road trip! Let’s get started! Engine Performance – It’s a smart idea to stay on top of replacing all of your filters especially if conditions are dusty. If you refuse, you’ll start to experience drivability problems like hard starts, rough idling, stalling, diminished power, etc. And with the cold weather heading our way soon, these existing problems will only become worse. Replace all dirty filters-air, fuel, etc. Tires – You should always have your tires rotated every 5,000 to 7,500 miles. And you should be checking the tire pressure at least once a month when the tires are cold, as long as your spare tire and tire jack. Examine tires for tread depth, uneven wear, and cupping; check the sidewalls for cuts and nicks - if you notice any of this, it’s time to replace. With winter headed our way, we recommend winter tires or all-season. Windshield Wipers – Did you know that a dirty windshield causes eye fatigue and can even pose as a safety hazard. You should be replacing your wipers every 6-8 months and we recommend choosing wipers designed for winter weather as we head into that season. Also, be sure to fill up your windshield washer reservoir! Heater/Defroster – You’ll want to stay warm this winter so it’s important to have your heating system checked and your defroster will provide you with visibility when conditions get cold. Some newer models have a cabin air filter that needs to be checked and replaced as needed. Oil – It’s important to change your vehicle’s oil and oil filter at the recommended intervals. Often times, newer vehicles have in-car oil life monitoring systems that will alert you when it’s time for an oil change. Depending on how frequent you drive or if you’re hauling or towing, you might need to change your oil more often. Just ask us about maintenance during your next service appointment! Regular service is important: You should always be regularly servicing your vehicle but when it comes to trading in your old ride, this is especially important. Not only do dealers take a look at the exterior vehicle, but we also want to know how it rides and what it’ll need to get up to standards. If you’ve taken great care of your vehicle, you’ll receive more for your trade! Sell it yourself: Often times, you could get more money for your old ride if you sell it privately. And sometimes this is a great option if you have the patience to do it! If you are not happy with the trade-in offer you receive, you might want to try selling your vehicle on the side. Spring is here and that means your list of spring cleaning is slowly growing. And unfortunately, I am here to add one more thing to that list. But luckily, I am providing you with a guide so you won’t have to spend all your time wondering how to clean it and you’ll able to get right down to business. And we’re going to do the same. Let’s get right into our guide on how to organize your garage this spring. Decluttering is key Your first step is to declutter your garage. I know you are not 100% sure what type of items have been collecting over the years and made your precious garage it's new home but it is time to find out. I recommend cleaning out your garage. And I mean removing every single item from it. While you’re doing that, be sure to separate your items into three piles: a keep, a rehome, and toss/ recycle properly pile. I like to keep the mindset that if I haven’t used an item in over 6 months, it’s time to part ways! But if you truly can’t decide, I recommend storing the item and if you don’t use in a month’s time - definitely toss. Cleaning is fun Now onto the cleaning portion, we know, it’s not everyone’s favorite part nor is it fun but it is definitely an important part in getting organized and staying that way. At this point, your garage should be totally empty and we want you to clean it. And I mean really clean it with a little elbow grease. The floor, the shelves, under the benches, the ceiling, gosh if you can clean it - just do it! It might be a pain now, but you will thank yourself in the long run! Plus, having a clean garage will make the things you own look much better and newer which is a bonus. And who wants their vehicle sitting in a grimy looking garage? No one, so, clean everything and anything to make it look nice. You’ll even be able to show it off at your next family BBQ! Organization is KEY Seriously. When I think about being organized, I think about being successful and that’s truly the end goal, right? Right. And, if you have you ever been looking for something and can’t find it because you are not organized, it’s frustrating. Choose how you want to organize your items and stick to the plan you set. There are plenty of options. Storage shelving, workbench, cabinets, wall or ceiling racks - choose what’s best for you and install. I personally like racks because you can get your items stored out of the way yet still able to see where they are. And shelving is a great option if you tend to have a lot of bulky items. They can live off the garage floor but still in sight if you need something. It’s time to rehome Once the above steps are complete, start putting your belongings back into your garage in their new home. I like to keep like items together like fluids, paints, and other liquids, etc. but like I said, choose a plan that works for you and stick to it. Keep all of your tools in one location so you know where to go when you’re looking for something specific. Also, keep items that you use frequently closer to your reach versus storing them up high. Air pressure is expressed in kPa (kilopascal) or psi (pounds per square inch). Accessory Weight: The combined weight of optional accessories. Some examples of optional accessories are an automatic transmission, power windows, power seats, and air conditioning. Aspect Ratio: The relationship of a tire's height to its width. Belt: A rubber-coated layer of cords between the plies and the tread. Cords may be made from steel or other reinforcing materials. Bead: The tire bead contains steel wires wrapped by steel cords that hold the tire onto the rim. Bias Ply Tire: A pneumatic tire in which the plies are laid at alternate angles less than 90 degrees to the centerline of the tread. Cold Tire Pressure: The amount of air pressure in a tire, measured in kPa (kilopascal) or psi pounds per square inch) before a tire has built up heat from driving. Curb Weight: The weight of a motor vehicle with standard and optional equipment including the maximum capacity of fuel, oil, and coolant, but without passengers and cargo. DOT Markings: A code molded into the sidewall of a tire signifying that the tire is in compliance with the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) Motor Vehicle Safety Standards. The DOT code includes the Tire Identification Number (TIN), an alphanumeric designator which can also identify the tire manufacturer, production plant, brand, and date of production. GVWR: Gross Vehicle Weight Rating. GAWR FRT: Gross Axle Weight Rating for the front axle. GAWR RR: Gross Axle Weight Rating for the rear axle. Intended Outboard Sidewall: The side of an asymmetrical tire that must always face outward when mounted on a vehicle. Kilopascal (kPa): The metric unit for air pressure. Light Truck (LT-Metric) Tire: A tire used on light duty trucks and some multipurpose passenger vehicles. Load Index: An assigned number ranging from 1 to 279 that corresponds to the load of a tire. Maximum Inflation Pressure: The maximum air pressure to which a cold tire can be inflated. The maximum air pressure is molded onto the sidewall. Maximum Load Rating: The load rating for a tire at the maximum permissible inflation pressure for that tire. Maximum Loaded Vehicle Weight: The sum of curb weight, accessory weight, vehicle capacity weight, and production options weight. Normal Occupant Weight: The number of occupants a vehicle is designed to seat multiplied by 68 kg (150 lb). Occupant Distribution: Designated seating positions. Outward Facing Sidewall: The side of an asymmetrical tire that has a particular side that faces outward when mounted on a vehicle. The side of the tire that contains a whitewall, bears white lettering, or bears manufacturer, brand, and/or model name molding that is higher or deeper than the same moldings on the other sidewall of the tire. Passenger (P-Metric) Tire: A tire used on passenger cars and some light duty trucks and multipurpose vehicles. Recommended Inflation Pressure: Vehicle manufacturer's recommended tire inflation pressure as shown on the tire placard. Radial Ply Tire: A pneumatic tire in which the ply cords that extend to the beads are laid at 90 degrees to the centerline of the tread. Rim: A metal support for a tire and upon which the tire beads are seated. Sidewall: The portion of a tire between the tread and the bead. Speed Rating: An alphanumeric code assigned to a tire indicating the maximum speed at which a tire can operate. Traction: The friction between the tire and the road surface. The amount of grip provided. Tread: The portion of a tire that comes into contact with the road. Treadwear Indicators: Narrow bands, sometimes called wear bars, that show across the tread of a tire when only 1.6 mm (1/16 in) of tread remains. UTQGS (Uniform Tire Quality Grading Standards): A tire information system that provides consumers with ratings for a tire's traction, temperature, and treadwear. Ratings are determined by tire manufacturers using government testing procedures. The ratings are molded into the sidewall of the tire. Vehicle Capacity Weight: The number of designated seating positions multiplied by 68 kg (150  lb) plus the rated cargo load. Vehicle Maximum Load on the Tire: Load on an individual tire due to curb weight, accessory weight, occupant weight, and cargo weight. If you’re anything like me, you like to try to squeeze each and every drop of gasoline that you can out of your last fill-up. Now, while you think that this is good for your wallet, it is actually bad for it in the long run, as well as your gas tank. And, I am 100 percent positive that you have heard your parents say “don’t let your tank drop below a quarter,” at least one time. This week, I am telling you why you should listen to them and hopefully, you’ll stop squeezing each drop out of each fill-up. Fuel Gauges Aren’t 100% Accurate I said it - that number on your dash, that’s not always accurate. Depending on your driving habits, this number can fluctuate and in turn, leave you stranded on the side of the road if you like to run on the empty side. You should consider this an estimate, not an exact mileage to empty. Don’t put yourself at risk or in harm’s way when you suddenly stop in the middle of the roadway because you were too lazy to fill up! You’re Wearing Out The Pump Did you know that gasoline acts as a coolant for your vehicle’s electric fuel-pump motor, as well as your engine? No? Well, it’s true. That means your vehicle needs gasoline to keep cool and when you run low, your vehicle will begin to suck in air and won't be getting the correct amount of fuel to keep cool. And that’s bad, duh! While sucking in air, this allows hot air to get into your system and will eventually wear out your pump. In short, this repair is costly and 100% preventable. Sediment Implications Are REAL Each time you fill up your tank, the sediments in the gasoline settle to the bottom of your tank. Gross, I know! When you run low on fuel, those sediments get stirred up into your gasoline and are sucked up into your tank. This dirty mixture can end up in either your fuel line or your engine which will cause big, big problems down the road. Long story short, fill up your gas tank and don’t even think about letting your vehicle’s tank dip below a quarter. Trust us, it will only benefit you in the long run! Service With Zappone And Save!

So, spend a little more on that car wash and vacuum up all those crumbs! Got dings, dents, or missing paint? If your old ride has any dings, dents, or missing paint - fix it up like new. These type of cosmetic damages can reduce the amount you’ll get for your trade all because you didn’t want to fix them. Trust us, spend the money to repair and get your money's worth for your trade. Living in Upstate New York means that you have to be ready for whatever weather conditions may be thrown our way. One day it is sunny, 70 degrees and the next it could be snowing. So, with these ever-changing weather conditions, we have to be prepared with what to do if we find ourselves stuck in the mud or snow. I know, I’ve mentioned snow twice already and fall hasn’t even fully started yet. But, it’s better to be prepared than to be sorry. This week we are sharing our tips to getting unstuck, take a look and let us know what tips have worked best for you in the past! Keep it moving, if you feel yourself beginning to get stuck in the mud or snow, keep your vehicle moving if possible. Any type of forward motion is a good thing and coming to a complete stop will only cause problems. Don’t keep spinning your wheels. When you’re stuck, you’re stuck. Don’t continue to push on your gas pedal, this will only deepen the rut that you’re stuck in. Shift into your lowest gear to give yourself more control. Rock it out - while gently pressing on your gas pedal, shift between drive and reverse to create a rocking motion to help free you. Doing this repeatedly can help get you unstuck but if it doesn’t work after a few shifts, move on. Add traction - use items like rubber mats, blankets, sand, kitty litter, sticks. Place these items in front of your tires and gently press on your gas pedal. You’ve lost traction and that’s why you’re stuck, these items can help your tires get a grip and pull your vehicle out of the rut. Keep your wheels straight - don’t turn them. Dig, dig, dig. If you’re still stuck, try to dig the snow or mud out from around your tires and make a pathway to solid ground if you can. At this point, if your vehicle is still stuck in the snow or mud it might be time to reach out to a friend to help push or tow your vehicle out of the rut.
